Honduras: Pepe’s perfidious people

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

WHAT President Porfirio “Pepe” Lobo has every right to feel betrayed by his friends on the Supreme Court, which last week decided that here will be no model city in Honduras, on the grounds that the project involves a surrender of national sovereignty and is therefore unconstitutional.

WHY The president appoints four of the seven judges of the top court, with the expectation that they will support measures, proposed by his or her administration.

WHAT NEXT Loyalty only went so far in the case of the project, which would have let private investors build and operate a city with its own rules, with the expectation that the plan would help create new opportunities in Honduras, the second-poorest country in Latin America, and the one with the world’s highest homicide rate. Lobo’s administration is working on other development projects, including a new national airport. But the model city, which was supposed to be the ornament of Lobo’s presidency, may be remembered only for its perfidy.
