Honduras's tax hikes affect tourism to Roatán

At least three direct flights from Canada and Italy to the island of Roatán, Honduras, have been cancelled after the government approved a new tax law.

The law imposes an 18 percent sales tax on first-class air tickets and 15 percent on certain foods, services and products.

"More than 100,000 people canceled their trips to Honduras from January to May this year, as hotels are charging a 15 percent sales tax plus a 4 percent tourism tax," the president of the Roatán tourism chamber Rita Thompson said.
