Huge $200 million tower planned for Panama City is beset by controversy

Monday, August 23, 2010

Controversy surrounds the 300 meters-high tower that is to be build by the government at the site of the former US embassy in Panama City.

The Torre Financiera, as it will be known, will house the offices of the Banco Nacional de Panamá, and the banking, insurance and stock-market regulators, among several other bodies.

But several sectors have rejected the $200 million project. Not least, many believe that the demolition of the former US embassy will deal a blow to the nation’s history.
