ICE buys 400,000 lines from Ericsson in face of slow demand for third generation

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

The state Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) is buying 400,000 cellular GSM lines from the Costa Rican unit of Ericsson.

The new lines will be available to the public  by September, the ICE reckons. The institute is betting on demand for new GSM connections rather than third-generation (3G) lines, which have been slow to take up in Costa Rica.

Customers want more GSM lines, basically because of the pre-payment option.
