Indigenous groups from Panama block Costa Rican border in mining protest

Thursday, February 2, 2012

Panamanian indigenous groups this Wednesday continued to block the Interamerican highway which connects Panama with Costa Rica, as a protest against mining development in their lands.

The blockade has caused an estimated $1.5 million in merchandise transport losses, said the president of Panama's National Chamber of
Cargo Transport, Manuel Mora.

There are currently 25 requests from ten companies interested in mining gold and other minerals in Panama's indigenous lands.
