Indigenous protesters renew anti-dams blockade of Pan-American Highway in Panama

Monday, February 20, 2012

Members of an Indigenous tribe in Panama are blocking the Pan-American Highway again after a breakdown in negotiations with the government over new dams.

Local television showed groups of Ngobe-Bugle Indians blocking the highway Friday in two spots in the province of Chiriqui near the border with Costa Rica.

Mediator Jose Luis Lacunza says the government agreed during negotiations to cancel all mining concessions but the talks broke down over dams.
