Japan says 'No' to militarized port

Friday, January 18, 2019

A letter from the Foreign Ministry of El Salvador to the nation's port authority confirms that Japan is demanding assurances that the port of La Unión will not be used for military purposes in the event of a concession. The port has been a white elephant for more than a decade.

The letter is a clarification of the position of the Japanese embassy and its cooperation agency, JICA, as they study the terms of the upcoming tender for the concession.

JICA has already lent $101 million to the port, where attempt to award a concession have already twice failed.
