Labor chiefs say they face persecution in El Salvador

Monday, June 4, 2012

Persecution of trade unionists remains a problem in El Salvador, althought the country is governed by a left-wing party that advocates labour rights, union leaders say.

Many labour leaders criticize the Mauricio Funes administration for not making enough progress on union rights.

"People are still fearful of organising or strengthening trade unions," said Róger Gutiérrez, a leader of the Federation of Independent Associations and Unions of El Salvador.
