Maersk called on to protect Nicaragua

Thursday, October 2, 2014

Danish non-governmental organization Forests of the World has called upon Maersk to use its might to protect the indigenous peoples and environment of Nicaragua as the proposed canal project in the country gathers steam.

The planned Nicaragua Canal aims to cut through the Central American country, potentially displacing indigenous communities and tearing down rainforest in order to provide a rival to the soon to be expanded Panama Canal.

“Maersk’s interests are being used as an argument for building the canal. This gives Maersk a unique opportunity to ensure that the project is not implemented at the expense of indigenous peoples’ rights and unique natural habitat," said Forests of the World Central America representative Claus Kjaerby.
