Man killed in clash between police and indigenous anti-mining protesters in Panama

Monday, February 6, 2012

One man was killed and 39 people were injured in Panama in clashes between police and a group of anti-mining protesters blocking the Pan-American highway.

Protest leader Liborio Miranda said a 26 year-old indigenous man was shot in the chest, to which the protesters responded by burning a police station in San Felix, 250 miles west of Panama City.

The indigenous groups were protesting a decision by a legislative committee to lift a suspension of mining and reservoir construction in their region.
