The campaign in Mexico launched by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to stamp out fuel theft has been very popular, according to opinion polls.

Now the results of the campaign show that the theft is a very big business. The authorities have blocked the bank accounts of 42 companies, arrested 400 people and opened more than 1,800 files on suspects.

The suspected companies include several that are affiliates of the state oil company, Pemex.
