Newmont Mining to buy Goldcorp for $10 billion

Tuesday, January 15, 2019

Newmont Mining aims to buy its Canadian rival Goldcorp in a deal valued at $10 billion and with major implications for operations in Mexico and Central America.

Goldcorp has four mines in Canada, three in Mexico -- Peñasquito, Los Filos, y El Sauzal -- as well as the Marlin gold and silver mine in Guatemala.

The announcement of the operation follows three months after Barrick Gold decided to buy Randgold Resources in a $5.4 billion transaction, which sparked speculation that their rivals would be obliged to respond.
