Nicaragua adopts labor program devised by US

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Nicaragua became the first Latin American country to adopt the US Better Work program for free-trade zones. The decision was prompted by the visit to Nicaragua of the US Labor secretary, Hilda Solís, who is of Nicaraguan origin.

The project is led by the International Labor Organization and the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation.

Álvaro Baltodano, the technical secretary of the National Corporation of Free Zones, argued that the country was chosen to implement the program because of its high standards in labor protection.
