Nicaragua aims to reduce dependence on oil with growth of alternative energy

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

The government of Nicaragua is seeking to grow less dependent on foreign oil and become a leader in sustainable development.

Oil accounts for 70 per cent of the country's power generation, which means the economy takes a hit every time international oil prices soar.

Renewable energy will help bring electrification, development and progress to the countryside, in a way that protects the environment, say government officials.
