Nicaragua canal poses new challenge to Ortega

The government of Nicaragua argues the project will create tens of thousands of jobs and boost GDP by up to 12 percent – a critical point in a country where nearly three-quarters of the population lives on less than $4 a day.

But the canal has encountered both careful criticism and fierce opposition from Nicaraguans.
