Nicaragua launches feasibility study for its canal

Nicaragua's plan to build an alternative to the Panama Canal has taken its first step.

The government has hired two companies from the Netherlands to carry out a feasibility study. The $720,000 cost will be contributed by the government of the Netherlands.

Nicaraguan legislators have backed the project but it has been met with skepticism by critics of the government and independent analysts.
