Nicaragua leads in women legislators

With 37 women representing 41% of 92 legislators, Nicaragua is the Central American with the highest level of gender equality, according to an Eclac study published last week.

Costa Rica is second, with 19 women – 33% - of a total of 57 members of Congress.

Cuba, where women represent 49% of legislators, is the Latin American leader in gender equity.

Haiti, with no women parliamentarians, is last in Latin America.

The study includes 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (number in parentheses indicate percentage of women deputies in each country).
