Nicaragua revives its cotton plantations. Fiber will save on imports for the free-zone garment and textile industries

Cotton, along with coffee, was a major export of Nicaragua in the 1960s and 1970s. Coffee still is but cotton no longer.

Now the government has launched a drive to revive cotton and in January the first new crop in years will be ready in January.

The project is of vital importance to the textile and garment factories in the free zones. Nicaraguan-made cotton will save expensive imports from the United States and Asia.
