Nicaraguan private sector opposes 'patriotic' tax

Thursday, September 19, 2013

Nicaragua's private sector council, known as Cosep, recommended the government to eliminate a 35 percent "patriotic tax" on goods imported from Colombia.

The recommendation was given despite Cosep's backing of the Nicaraguan government in a territorial dispute with Colombia.

"We must separate trade from politics and we uphold our request to the government of eliminating the tax," said the president of the Cosep, José Adán Aguerrí.
