No early resolution for Nicaragua-Costa Rica

 

Tomorrow’s decision by the International Court of Justice on the ownership of Portillos island will not be the end of the dispute between Nicaragua and Costa Rica over rights over oil, natural gas and fisheries.

The maritime limits will not be settled once and for all. They will depend on other legal precedents and traits, some of them dating from the 19th century.
