One third of all companies in Costa Rica fail to pay the minimum wage

An inspection of 1.826 firms throughout Costa Rica by the Labour Ministry reveals that 39 per cent of businesses fail to pay minimum wages.
 
The region with the largest cases of non-compliance is the Central Valley, with 50 percnet of the companies visited failing to pay the minimum wage established by law.
 
Alvaro Sojo, interim Labour Minister, said the figures caught the ministry by surprise.
