Opposition to El Salvador carbon credit plan

Friday, August 3, 2012

Civil society organizations are asking the World Bank to reject the Salvadoran government’s proposal to join a program for reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to deforestation, on the argument that it will actually harm the environment.

If the government’s proposal is accepted it would delay “complaince of urgent national and international commitments on climate change,” say activists in a letter sent to Benoît Bosquet, coordinator of the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility.

The facility coordinates the global program for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation. El Salvador kicked off the adherence process when it sent the first document in April.
