Panama Canal expansion could reduce shipping’s environmental impact

The Panama Canal expansion brings with it a unique opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of the maritime industry, experts claim.
In a paper published in the International Journal of Maritime Engineering, Paul Stott and Dr Peter Wright of Newcastle University argue the expansion of the canal offers the industry as a whole an opportunity to reduce its environmental impact.
“Potentially, what we have here is an ideal opportunity to implement some quite simple changes that will make a significant difference to the environmental credentials of the industry,” says Stott.
