Panama Canal has no real alternative, expert says

The Panama Canal has no real alternative in terms of transportation of cargo from the Atlantic to the Pacific, according to an expert in international logistics.

Nicaragua has proposed a canal of its own at a cost of some $30 billion. But really it would only be able to compete in niche markets, the expert added.

Colombia's "land bridge" would be much less expensive but mainly it would be used to open up trade with the oceans to the Colombian interior, not international traffic.
