Panama economic growth is staging a comeback

Wednesday, January 2, 2019

Panama's economy is going to grow by 6.8 percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund, which reckons that the 2018 figure will be about 4.6 percent.

About a decade ago, the Panamanian economy was growing by double digits, spurred by the expansion of the Canal and the development of Central America's first Metro system.

Panama continues to have led economic growth in Central America in recent years, but with much more modest results. The 2018 outcome is partly a result of a prolonged construction strike in the first half of the year.
