Panama government reaches accord on controversial hydro project

Amid protests, the government okf Panama and leaders of the Ngäbe Buglé indigenous community signed an accord to complete the Barro Blanco hydroelectric scheme.

President Juan Carlos Varela desribed the protesters as “a radical minority”. Genisa, the Panama-based company that was building Barro Blanco will be replaced by an “independent institution that is fully experienced in the construction and maintenance of hydroelectric projects,” Varela said.
