Panama has half a million informal workers

Tuesday, September 2, 2014

Thirty-nine percent of Panama's working-age population is employed in the informal sector, according to government figures.

The number, which currently stands at half a million people, affects the country's economy because informal workers pay no taxes, said Carlos Gómez, former president of the country's School of Economists.

The government should establish a policy that incorporates informal businesses and workers into the country's tax system, said economist Raúl Bethancourt.
