Panama: least likely military coup

Tuesday, July 9, 2013

Panama is least likely among 24 Latin American countries to accept the concept of a coup, which overthrows the government, according to this year’s Barometer of Public Opinion Project of the Americas.

In Central America, the second lowest level of support for a potential coup is in Costa Rica, which like Panama has no standing army.

In the region, Salvadorans are least resistant to the idea of a military takeover, while Peru is least reluctant, overall (figures in brackets indicate the position of the Central American countries, according to the level of support for a coup).

1. Panama (24)
2. Costa Rica (14)
3. Nicaragua (11)
4. Honduras (9)
5. Guatemala (8)
6. El Salvador (3)
