Panama: making movies

Monday, May 7, 2012

Panamanian filmmakers as of last week have a new source of financial support, following the approval by the government of president Ricardo Martinelli of an annual $3 million fund for local productions.

The new rules were approved at the same time as Panama held its first International Film Festival, a project developed by Pituka Ortega Heilbron, together with Henk van der Kolk, a founder of the Toronto festival.

The fund is small, but so is the number of local producers, who in any case do not aspire to shoot Hollywood-style feature films. On the other hand, grants from the fund may let local producers make movies, which compete commercially in markets throughout Latin America.

In addition, financial support from the fund may make a project more attractive to private investors, who may be of any nationality.
