Panama opposition holds final rallies before votes

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Panama’s opposition candidates criticized the ruling party over rising prices and corruption as they wound down their presidential campaigns ahead of national elections on May 4.

Vice President Juan Carlos Varela, who split from the ruling party, said at a rally yesterday that there are “two Panamas,” with the country headed by the “few who have everything.”

Former Panama City Mayor Juan Carlos Navarro said he would be open to talks with union leaders who have paralyzed construction across the Central American country, demanding higher wages.
