Panama's Metro 3 mega-tender gets underway

The main tender for the third line of the Panama Metro is underway, with the publication on the Panamá Compra portal. The cost of the project is expected to be about $2.6 billion.

The tender covers design, engineering, public works and the integral system. Seven companies have been prequalified. They include South Korea's Hyundai, China Harbour Engineering, Spain's OHL and Caro of Mexico which is controlled by billionaire Carlos Slim.

The project also includes a mono-rail section. Last month Japan's Hitachi signed a $840 million contract for the projects electrical system, signaling and telecommunications.
