Personnel from private security firms vastly outnumber police in Costa Rica

Private security personnel in Costa Rica represent 60 percent of the country's total security staff.

Hiring private companies for security is costing Costa Rican companies up to $250 million each year.

When taking into account both registered and informal private security officers, combined they outnumber Costa Rica's public security four to one.
