Pest harms Costa Rica's pineapple sector

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

A consistent fly infestation forced Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health to a 90-day ban on the waste processing of pineapples.

The outbreak, sweeping through the north of the country, is attributed to 12 large pineapple producing companies that have illegally dumped their waste.

The flies also have an enormous impact on the cattle-breeding industry, as well as on 15 neighboring regions of Cutris de San Carlos, according to a news report by Radio Santa Clara.
