Rains cause death and destruction across region

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread destruction in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras. The costs in monetary terms have yet to be estimated.
 
Floods, landslides and other incidents have caused 300 deaths and material damage throughout Central America since the rainy season began in May.
 
According to President Álvaro Colom, the recent rainfall has cost his country’s economy between $367 and $500 million.
