Central America received $17 billion in remittances last year. But the region’s emigrants in the United States paid $600 million in commissions.

The figure was revealed in a study that was presented to a meeting of consumers’ associations throughout the region.

The study found that the most economical way to send remittances was by transfers among banks. The most expensive was the use of credit cards.
