Remittances spell deficit for the annual current account of Panama

Each year, Central American emigrants send billions of dollars back home to their families. And those billions form the backbone of the economies of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

But the reverse is the case in Panama. There, where some 4 percent of the population is of foreign origin, more money is sent from Panama to overseas rather than the okther way round.
