State health services disrupted by nationwide strike in Costa Rica

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Today is the second day of a national health strike affecting all state hospitals and clinics in Costa Rica.

The two sides are not yet willing to launch negotiations. The main point of contention by the workers’ union is over cuts in disability pay and benefits.

The union will not give in on this point, while the presidenta of the Costa Rican social security institute (CSSS), Ileana Balmaceda, accuses union leaders of being unwilling to reasonable negotiations.
