State is strangling us, Panama business leaders say

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Panama’s business leaders complain that their companies are suffering from the government’s stranglehold over the economy.

Thanks to the state enterprises, the state has a 40 percent share of Panama’s economy, and that is much too high, the business leaders say.

According to the nation’s association of business executives, the government enterprises dominate sectors such as water and electricity, while they also include such money-spinners as the national lottery and the Panama Canal.
