Test runs under way for Panama canal expansion

Monday, June 13, 2016

The $5 billion project to expand the Panama Canal is ready for its debut, but the New Panamax behemoths for which it was designed — stretching 1,200 feet from stem to stern — have not yet used the crossing.

The first test runs along the newly expanded canal began last week as tugs nudged the bulk cargo carrier Baroque into the first level of locks on the Atlantic side of the canal.
