The woman who made history in the Panama Canal

Friday, March 8, 2019

Ilya Espino de Marotta becomes famous as the woman who became a leader of the huge project to widen the Panama Canal in her helmet and pink jacket. That was her way of making a statement in the very masculine world of the maritime industry.

Now, three years later she was named in January as the first women to be a deputy administrator of the Canal.

"It would be ideal if we women were not to make news when they assume leadership roles," Espino de Marotta, who now has a key tole in the economy of Panama and the world maritime industry, Efe reports in Spanish.
