UN representative recommends moratorium on Guatemalan mining industry

Monday, June 21, 2010

James Anaya, the United Nations rapporteur on indigenous affairs, said that Guatemala ought to impose a moratorium on new mines pending a consultation with indigenous communities.

Anaya’s remarks were part of a preliminary statement that has yet to be presented by the UN of Guatemala, which has copper, gold and silver mines.

“There’s a lot of confusion and ambiguity on the content and findings of various consultancy reports,” said Anaya.
