US allows Central America to export dragonfruit

Thursday, April 19, 2012

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has allowed Central American countries to export fresh pitaya, or dragonfruit, to the United States.

Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama can now ship fresh dragonfruit to the United States, if the fruit is packed following USDA protocols.

Nicaragua expects to ship 1,200 metric tons of fresh pitaya to the United States annually, while the USDA said other Central American countries may ship similar amounts.
