Venezuela crisis looms over Pence Latin America trip

Tuesday, August 15, 2017

US Vice President Mike Pence opened his week-long trip to South and Central America in Cartagena Sunday with a stern message for neighboring Venezuela's autocratic government to end "the tragedy of tyranny" and to restore democracy.

Pence vowed to increase economic and diplomatic pressure on Venezuela and work with Colombia and other regional democracies to isolate the government of President Nicolás Maduro. He also sought to reassure the region after President Donald Trump warned last week of a "possible military option" in Venezuela, a comment that stoked anti-American sentiment by reviving dark memories of U.S. interventionism on the continent.
