Volcano alert in Guatemala no big threat to crops

Thursday, May 24, 2012

The orange alert decreed by the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction in Guatemala, before an imminent eruption of the Fuego volcano will not endanger Guatemala's fruit and vegetable crops.

The impact of an eruption would be relatively small compared to all of Guatemala's farmland, and supplies to El Salvador are unlikely to be severely affected.

Guatemala is one of El Salvador's major supplier of fruits and vegetables, due to production in El Salvador failing to meet demand.
