Volkswagen to make Golf hatchback in Mexico

Friday, January 25, 2013

Volkswagen said it will expand production of its top-selling model, the Golf hatchback, to Mexico early next year as part of a broader push by the German auto making giant to bolster its US sales and profits.

Volkswagen already builds a station wagon variation of the Golf at its plant in Puebla, Mexico.

But the move marks the first time the traditional hatchback will be produced in North America since the 1980s, when Volkswagen briefly produced the Golf, then known in the US as the Rabbit, at a plant in Westmoreland County, Pa.
