World Bank lends El Salvador $50 million to face disasters

Thursday, February 3, 2011

The World Bank has approved a loan of $50 million to El Salvador to help face natural disasters, which since 1972 have taken 6,500 lives and caused more than $16 billion in damage.

The bank said the country’s vulnerability to adverse natural events, exacerbated by environmental degradation and extreme climate variability, threatens development and growth in the long term.

“This new operation goes hand in hand with the emphasis we’re putting in the prevention of natural disasters, instead of focusing exclusively on the response, the bank said.
