World Bank slams high costs of regional transport

Monday, February 11, 2013

High transport costs in Central America, along with bad road conditions, could raise product prices up to 50 percent, affecting the region's competitiveness, said the World Bank.

The most affected are small producers who have to pay up to three times as much as larger companies in order to take their products to the borders or ports.

The World Bank's vice-president for Latin America and the Caribbean, Hasan Tuluy, said that the cost of logistics in Central America represents "more than 40 percent of the final product price, which is excessively high".
