Canada's Tahoe to pay the piper in Guatemala mine dispute

The dispute that has paralyzed the San Rafael silver mine in Guatemala has cost its owners, Canada's Tahoe Resources says it cost $15.6 million of its quarterly earnings and $8.1 million in maintenance.

Operations at San Rafael, one of the world's largest silver mines, have been halted for a year while the Constitutional Court resolves a dispute with an indigenous community that has accused the ministry of Mines of failing to conduct a consultation.

Tahoe, though not directly a party to the dispute, continues to pay the piper.
