Cattle ranching threatens Nicaragua Biosphere Reserve
Tuesday 28 March, 2017
The Biosphere Reserve of Southeast Nicaragua is one of the country’s largest biosphere reserves. It is home to 10 percent of the world’s species but is threatened by cattle ranching, a lucrative business in the Central American country.
Almost 50 years of human depredation is evident in the lush forest. But despite the agricultural pressure to which it is subjected, it has the equivalent of 10 percent of the planet’s species, according to data from the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources.
