Costa Rica leads region in control of illicit trade

Costa Rica leads Central America in protection from contraband, according to The Economist’s Global Illicit Trade Environment Index.

Ranked 46th globally, Costa Rica ranks fifth in Latin America.

Only Chile is among the top 30 in the continent.

Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador were not considered for the study.

Globally Finland is number one in controling illicit trade, while Lybia is last.

The index evaluates structural capability, laws, regulations, systems and effectiveness of governance among 84 nations (numbers in brackets indicate the global position of each country).
